Singing Guitar (1961-1967 recordings)

This compilation is a must-have for any fan of stylish instrumental pop of the sixties, especially for those who adore guitar heroes like Duane Eddy, Hank Marvin or Les Paul. “Singing Guitar” features the nearly forgotten czech guitarist Miroslav Kefurt with 61 tracks from the east and west german radio archives, recorded between 1961 and 1967 and at the very most never released before on record or CD.
Around 1960, Kefurt became the most innovative electric guitar player of Czechoslowakia and started recording instrumentals for the Supraphon label with his own small rhythm group. Besides this, he accompained many czech pop stars of the sixties on their records – as well as international folk and jazz interprets during their stay in Czechoslowakia. In late 1960, Kefurt moved to East Berlin to become a member of the Berlin Radio Dance Orchestra led by Günter Gollasch. Besides this engagement he recorded till 1967 about 200 instrumental tracks with his own ensemble not only at the East Berlin broadcasting house, but also for West German radio stations in Hamburg and Bremen.
This compilation is the very first presenting Kefurt’s work in Germany in all it’s amazing stylistic variety, covering Surf and Twist as well as Swing, Folk and Bossa Nova. A unique earmark of his sound was thereby the use of all kinds of guitar sound effects, especially a high pitched “trick guitar” created by tape overdubbing at half speed. Besides his own compositions, there are also many unique adaptations of world hits to discover on this double CD set: from “Ghost riders in the sky” and “House of the rising sun” till Charlie Parker’s “Scrapple from the apple”.
Just have an ear to some listening samples on this site – and you will wonder how this Czech guitar genius could fall out of memory for so long!
